AR Duel is an application for the Magic Leap One which allows two users in the same room to duel each other in a lightsaber fight. This was built to demo the Magic Leap Transmission toolkit to Magic Leap's executive staff.
Overview
AR Duel was a prototype multiplayer lightsaber-fighting experience developed for Magic Leap's internal Transmission Toolkit in 2019. The goal was to validate co-located AR multiplayer interaction without reliance on internet-based networking solutions like Photon PUN.
Technology
Built in Unity, AR Duel leveraged the Magic Leap Transmission Toolkit to enable shared spatial understanding between two Magic Leap One headsets. This toolkit facilitated low-latency, local multiplayer by syncing users within the same physical space.
Design & Interaction
Players used the Magic Leap One controller to wield a virtual lightsaber, visible to both participants in real-time. When the swords collided, an audiovisual cue confirmed the interaction. The core design focused on spatial fidelity, intuitive physicality, and low-friction multiplayer synchronization.
Outcome
The prototype was demonstrated successfully to Magic Leap executives, including then-CEO Rony Abovitz, helping validate the feasibility and potential of the Transmission Toolkit for shared AR experiences.
